Caballo Lake is located 20 miles downstream of Elephant Butte Lake, with the majestic Caballo mountains serving as a backdrop to the lake (8.309 sq miles). The lake was created in the 1930’s when an earthen dam was built across the Rio Grande River. The state park is 5,326 acres and has 2 cactus gardens in the park. Bald & golden eagles nest here in the winter (too bad it was not winter!) It is open all year and has 135 developed sites. The one thing that it does NOT have is shade trees. When we arrived at around 2pm it was 100 degrees! We left the RV hooked up to Gypsy for this was another one night stand.

I hiked down to the lake around sunset to take some pictures.

Leaving in the morning for City of Rocks campground and to check out Silver City. Who knows, we might even get rich…
