Today we traveled to Chama, New Mexico. The drive took us through many and varied landscape changes. From the red-rocks and canyons of Abiquiu to the grasslands & Ponderosa lined terrain of Chama. We checked out the Cumbers/Toltec steam train, but alas we were too late, the train left at 10am and would return around 4pm. The price was more than I remembered (some 25-30 years ago); it is now $95.00/person. There must have been a reason we missed the train. Although I am sure it would have been a fabulous experience!
We checked out another campground for our departure on the 6th of July, Heron Lake, which is just south of Chama. It definitely looks like our next stop. It is not that far from where we are now, but it looks like an experience well worth the adventure.

On our return to Abiquiu Lake we stopped at Echo Amphitheater. The Amphitheater was magnificent and an actual Echo chamber. There was a gentleman in the Amphitheater who was playing a guitar when I arrived. Although he was not of the ‘hippy generation’ he did have a Dylan flavor to his music. At a later moment, this gentleman pulled out a wooden flute which lead to a timeless feel in this landscape, (have I been here before?).

We have been amazed by the rock formations of this area since we arrived! The different colors, types of rock, and the depth have us in awe every time we turn around. The rock formations seem so similar and yet so different from each other. Truly an AWESOME place!

Great photos…keep them coming!

Really true! I remember Chama from about 30 – 35 years ago, and it still has the appeal of a sleepy little mountain town. We visited the ancient library and discovered friendly & helpful people who took an interest in our life-on-wheels!
