Today we took a tour of Georgia O’Keefe’s home and studio in Abiquiu. It was marvelous! Her house and studio are preserved just as she left it when she died at 98 years old. It is now part of the Historical Society and Georgia O’Keefe Museum. The tour guide was awesome. It was amazing to see some her (Georgia O’Keefe’s) paintings on display, as well as, some of her pottery (I did not know she did pottery). The buildings were simple and modestly decorated with earth tones throughout the buildings. The grounds are still maintained by the grandson of the first gardener. The energy of ‘peace’ surrounds the home, studio and gardens. She bought the house in Abiquiu so that she could garden because the earth at her house in Ghost Ranch was inhospitable (for gardening). We were not allowed to take any pictures inside of the house or studio.

I have loved Georgia O’Keefes’ work since I was in High School – actually being close to where she spent many days and nights of her life was incredible! She lived very much in the minimalist style of her art: only one light bulb in the entire house has a shade covering…all the rest are bare bulbs. Simplicity reigns in the soft, muted earth colors used throughout and the fabulous expanses of floor-to-ceiling glass windows left uncovered to let in all the vistas and New Mexico light. It was an awesome experience to tour her home!
